Phuntsholing, also spelled Phuentsholing is a border town in southern Bhutan that serves as the administrative center of Chukha District.[1][2] The town is located in sections of both Phuentsholing Gewog and Sampheling Gewog.[3] Phuentsholing adjoins the Indian town of Jaigaon, and cross-border trade has led to a thriving local economy.[4] Prior to the Bank of Bhutan’s relocation to Thimphu, Phuentsholing was home to the Bank of Bhutan’s headquarters.
The South Asian monsoon has a major influence on Phuntsholing’s hot tropical monsoon environment. 3,953 millimeters (155.6 in) of precipitation fall there on average each year. Summers are long, muggy and very rainy, while winters are short, very mild and dry. This climate is classified by the Köppen climatic classification as Am. At 40 °C (104 °F), Phuntsholing recorded the highest temperature ever recorded in Bhutan on August 27, 1997.[7]
Phuntsholing is the entry point for trade from India into Bhutan, as it is the transit point for the majority of products traded into the country. China’s border is blocked.
